Major quake hits off India’s Andaman Islands

Filed under: General — MOIN @ 5:12 am

PORT BLAIR, India (Reuters) – A major quake of magnitude 7.6 struck in the Indian Ocean off India’s Andaman Islands early Tuesday, triggering a tsunami watch for India, Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand and Bangladesh.
“The room shook for around 20 to 30 seconds, it was quite strong,” said Reuters correspondent Sanjit Kumar Roy in Port Blair, capital of the islands.
He said that in the northern part of Andaman Island, people ran out of their houses in panic. Police said there had been no reports so far of any damage.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake, initially reported as a magnitude 7.7, struck at 1:55 a.m. (8:05 p.m. British time on Monday). It was shallow, at a depth of 20.6 miles (33 km), and was centred 160 miles (260 km) north of Port Blair.
The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a tsunami watch for the region.
“Earthquakes of this size have the potential to generate a destructive local tsunami and sometimes a destructive regional tsunami along coasts located usually no more than a thousand kilometres (about 600 miles) from the earthquake epicentre,” the tsunami centre said in its bulletin.
However, an official at the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services said a tsunami warning had not been issued by his department.
“We have not issued a tsunami alert and are monitoring the water level changes in the region at the moment,” Ajay Kumar told Reuters by phone.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a chain of small islands hundreds of miles east of India in the Indian Ocean.
A 7.6 magnitude quake is classified by the USGS as a major earthquake and is capable of widespread, heavy damage.
An even bigger quake in the Indian Ocean in 2004 caused a tsunami that killed some 228,000 people.
In Indonesia, a meteorology agency official said his agency was monitoring the Aceh area on the tip of Sumatra. So far there had been no reports of a tsunami in Indonesia but it could take two hours for one to reach the coastline.

Austin Texas DWI Lawyer – How To Handle Your Violation

Filed under: General — MOIN @ 11:19 pm

While you should never drive while intoxicated, in Austin or anywhere else, it also helps to know the rules. What exactly constitutes a Austin DWI violation? That is what we will discuss here. The Austin DWI laws are quite strict and as long as you know what they are, you can avoid a lot of serious problems. An Austin DWI offense is regulated by the blood alcohol content. When a police officer stops you for suspicious driving, he is permitted to do a blood alcohol test on the driver of the car. This may be either a breath test or a blood test, but it is completely legal under Austin DWI law for the official to request it. If your blood alcohol concentration is over .08, the legal limit, you can be arrested. If you refuse to take the test, you will be assumed guilty, so it is worth doing the breath analysis in case you are actually below the limit. While the blood alcohol content test is a legal Austin DWI method of testing potentially drunk drivers, police officers usually begin by administering a sobriety test. These are pretty standard all over the country, where you will be asked to touch your nose with alternating fingers, walk in a straight line and stand on one foot. Should you fail this, you will be given the blood alcohol test. If you fail the test, you will be arrested under Austin DWI law and taken in to the police station.

Austin DWI laws are quite specific and you should be very careful to avoid breaking them since you can be held in jail until your court date. Simply appointing a designated driver will solve all these problems on a good night out.

Botox Training and Certification

Filed under: General — MOIN @ 10:56 pm

The best thing about a botox cosmetic injection procedure may seem to be the fact that it takes a short time to administer, approximately 10 minutes. But the fleeting duration in imparting of the Botox procedure should not be taken as to mean that the treatment is to be taken lightheartedly. It is imperative that precautions are taken at every stage of the Botox procedure and only trained medical practitioners be allowed to administer it.The medical practitioners have to be thoroughly versed in all aspects that go into normal Botox training. They should be aware of the health risks that may accrue from incorrect dosage or an incorrect mode of application. There is always the risk of an accidental low dose and over dose. For best results the Botox injection has to be applied in just the right dose and at the right part of the face. Therefore a comprehensive Botox training is a sine qua non.

Untrained people dispensing Botox in salons, gyms, hotel rooms, home-based offices, and other retail venues may turn out to be cheaper for patients but ultimately it poses a serious health risk. Improper techniques, inappropriate dosages, and unsanitary conditions could result from lack of adequate Botox training. In fact the FDA has made it clear that botox is an instruction drug that should be administer by a trained physician in an appropriate medical setting. Thus, botox training is very important.

Botox treatments should always begin with a consultation during which the doctor will study the patient’s frown and smile lines and decide on an effective treatment. The patient will be asked to fill out a questionnaire that asks everything from the perceived skin type to how much time they spent in the sun to a full medical history. The area of the skin to be treated with Botox is cleaned and local anesthetic administered before the treatment can start. Only a Botox-trained doctor can insure that all the necessary precautions are taken at each stage of the treatment.

San Carlos Woman Files Lawsuit in Nestle Cookie Dough Food Poisoning

Filed under: General — MOIN @ 8:10 pm

Even as Nestle announced a nationwide recall of its Toll House cookie dough because of fears of E. coli contamination, a San Carlos woman has filed a lawsuit against the company after she contracted the infection, and was hospitalized for a week.

18-year-old Jillian Collins was hospitalized at Stanford Medical Center after she contracted the potentially fatal infection. Collins is one of the approximately 70 people across 30 states who have fallen sick after eating the tainted cookie dough. So far, none of the illnesses have resulted in deaths. Collins’ lawsuit has been filed in the San Mateo County Superior Court. According to Collins, she purchased the cookie dough at a Safeway store in Belmont, and ate “between a quarter to a half of the raw cookie dough”. A couple of days later, she began to suffer from nausea and abdominal cramps. She was admitted to the Palo Alto Medical Foundation by which time she had began to suffer from bloody diarrhea. A biopsy confirmed the presence of E.coli. She was released after being treated at the Sanford Medical Center for a week.

Sendio I.C.E. Box anti-spam appliance review

Filed under: General — MOIN @ 1:50 pm

The Sendio I.C.E. (Intercept, Confirm or Eliminate) Box anti-spam appliance brings an assortment of weapons to do battle with the evil spammers of the world, including challenge-response (Sender Address Verification (SAV)), silverlisting, SPF, Domain Keys and Sender Policy Framework (SPF) with detailed SMTP protocol checks, and finally blacklisting by domain name or email address on a system-wide or per user basis. Sendio doesn’t include spam filters, but don’t get Tim Lee Thorpe, VP of Marketing started. When I spoke with him he explained how much he dislikes spam filters. He explained, it’s a game of wack-a-mole with the spammers as they simply tweak their messages to get past the filters. Don’t I know it.

One of the problems of deploying corporate-wide filters is that they are global in nature and can block legitimate email. For instance, one person in the company may want the raunchy jokes coming from their uncle but not from anyone else. Global filters simply cannot identify which emails with a specific keyword coming from a specific sender to allow and which to disallow. This results in filtering rules that are a shotgun approach that shoot everything that looks or smells like spam, even if it isn’t. Further, as spammers get more adept at avoiding the filters, IT departments turn up the filtering resulting in more legitimate email getting blocked. Sendio takes a unique approach in that users can decide individually who gets access to their Inbox.

As CTO, I’ve done battle with the evil spammer forces many times and I have the scars to prove it. Just when I thought all hope was lost, our noble saviors have arrived — namely Mad Stephen BraveheartSendio. (that’s a rough quote from “Mad Stephen” in Braveheart in case you missed it).

Sendio sent me one of their appliances to test and review in TMC’s actual production email environment. Could Sendio finally be the weapon to defeat the spammers?

Read on my good friends, read on…

Installation
Installing the Sendio I.C.E. Box Linux-based appliance was pretty easy to do. Sendio typically guides customers through the installation process over the phone and using SSH access to the box. Here’s the SSH admin screen:

Navigating around with the cursor keys was pretty easy to do. There was only some rudimentary settings that have to be done via the SSH console. If you’re not a fan of text-based admins, no worries since most of the day-to-day administration is done in the Web-based admin which is very user-friendly, as seen here:

Benchmarking

Process benchmarking: an application to lending products

Benchmarking techniques evolved from Xerox’s pioneering visit to Japan in the late 1970s. However, the application of the benchmarking concept to the banking industry did not take place until the late 1990s. Process benchmarking, in particular, is a tool that helps FIs to cut costs, improve productivity and integrate business processes. Although process benchmarking involves divulging what may be considered as sensitive or confidential information, forming de facto benchmarking partnerships with competitors allows participating institutions to compare cost and output advantages and disadvantages, when performing key processes involved in lending operations. This paper presents an application of process benchmarking to lending operations across Australia to highlight differences in costs involved in seemingly identical value chains.
